Michael Dougan’s Lecture on EU Membership and Values

On May 12, 2026, an online lecture titled “European Union Membership and Values: Lessons from Hungary” was delivered by Professor Michael Dougan of the University of Liverpool. The event took place as part of a guest lecture series on EU law, organized by the Department of International, European and Comparative Law at Sumy State University (SumDU) in cooperation with the Editorial Board of the Common Market Law Review.

During the lecture, the participants discussed contemporary challenges related to member states’ compliance with European Union values, as well as the specific dynamics between EU law and national legal systems. Particular attention was paid to the Hungarian case as an example of ongoing debates surrounding the rule of law and democratic standards within the EU.

The event brought together lecturers, students, and European integration researchers from universities across Sumy, Poltava, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Lviv, and other regions of Ukraine. We sincerely thank Professor Dougan for such an insightful lecture, and all the participants for their active engagement.
